History
Bodegas Franco-Españolas was founded in 1890 as a result of collaboration between France and Spain, at a time when the French were seeking to replace their vineyards affected by phylloxera. The first harvest, in 1891, produced iconic wines such as Diamante and Estilo Borgoña (later Rioja Bordón). In 1920, the winery became fully Spanish. Throughout the 20th century, it received illustrious visitors such as King Alfonso XIII and Ernest Hemingway, and expanded its exports after the end of Prohibition in the US. In 1984, it was acquired by Marcos Eguizábal, and since 2016, it has been run by Borja Eguizábal. Today, the winery is a benchmark for wine tourism and culture in La Rioja.
