CAPÇANES is the name of a town and its cooperative, both located in the Priorato region, in the interior of the province of Tarragona. Their vineyards belonged to the Subzona Falset of the D.O. Tarragona until the end of 2001 of said Subzone was born the new D.O. Montsant.
Going back in our history, we remember how the wine was made in the farmhouse corresponding to the harvested vineyard, until in 1933 several families of the town founded the Cooperative. This fact supposed a change of commercial perspectives being able to offer, until the beginning of the nineties, large volumes of wine in bulk at competitive prices. The first wines aged in barrel date from 1991, although the impetus for the definitive change was lived in 1995 following a meeting with the Jewish Community of Barcelona and their request to vinify in the cooperative an unpasteurized kosher wine with the method "Lo Mebushal". In order to identify, isolate and vinify small batches of selected grapes under the rabbi's strict control, new facilities were needed. Thanks to this new technology, it was possible to elaborate the "Spring Flower", recognized as one of the great kosher wines of the world. That was the trigger for the process of creating a full range of bottled non-kosher wines.
While kosher wine accounts for only 5% of the total production of bottled wines, the other 95% created the reputation of the winery throughout the world. With the 1996 vintage a new style of wine appears and since then Capçanes has not seen a reversal. Immense investments have been made and the entire winery has been completely restructured and modernized with the new barrel warehouse completed at the end of 2001. These changes have been possible thanks to the dynamic character and above all to the common sense of the 80 cooperative members, who have endorsed, in proportion to the amount of grapes produced by each, the bank loan. Obtaining the consent of the partners highlights the charisma and vision of the president of the cooperative, Marcel Ferré, as well as the board of directors.
With almost 250 hectares of vineyards, the winery's annual production now amounts to 800,000 bottles and 200,000 liters of local bulk wine sales / bag in box.
In Capçanes the talent of Anna Rovira, the winemaker of the winery, whose responsibility extends to the control of the vineyards and the German Jürgen Wagner, responsible for export, who contributes with their experience to the definition and composition of the coupons.
Thanks to its enthusiastic people, viticultural partners who pamper the land they live in and the professional team of the winery, in Capçanes the term "cooperative" is lived with pride, verifying day by day how far it can be reached.
