Conservas Yurrita is a family business founded in 1867. Originally it was dedicated to the production and sale of pickled and salted fish that was distributed from Mutriku to the rest of Spain, using horse carts as a method of transport. The original factory started in the basement of the Yurrita family house. The primitive Yurrita canning factory is known as "Casa Mauleón". Of all the current Spanish canneries, this building is probably the oldest of those dedicated to the production of canned fish.
The company was founded by Mr. José Miguel Mauleón, in the same place of residence of the family, in "Casa Mauleon". José Miguel's daughter, Francisca, married Agapito Yurrita, with which they formed the second generation and the beginning of the Yurrita family in the canning and salting industry. After five generations and almost 150 years of history, Yurrita is the oldest cannery in the Basque Country and one of the oldest agri-food companies in Spain.
With the incorporation in the 50s of Don Alfonso Yurrita Zumalabe Conservas Yurrita opened to the foreign market. The export was crucial for the development of the company throughout the complicated postwar years. This export effort has allowed the company to currently have a dense network of customers in more than 60 countries around the world.
Nowadays Yurrita Group is involved in the production of a wide variety of Gourmet products. Although Anchovy and Bonito del Cantábrico are the flagships of the company, they also produce a wide range of artisanal croquettes and some dishes from Basque cuisine such as cabracho, txangurro and bonito cakes or squid in ink and onions.
