Aldi is a discount supermarket chain of German origin. The first store was opened in Essen by the brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946, starting from an old family business, and since 1962 it operates under the current brand (acronym of Albrecht-Diskont). It currently operates more than 10,000 establishments in 18 countries, making it the leading group in the retail sector in Germany and one of the most important globally.1 The company has been divided since 1966 into two subsidiaries, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, who share the German and international market.
