Crab Cetárea Bowls

This species of crustacean from the Majidae family is notable for being a large migratory crab (up to 20 cm in diameter). Its shell is thick and rounded, 18-20 cm long, with sharp spines and bristles of varying size. We often see it covered in algae (a characteristic of shellfish from the Cantabrian Sea, also known as "del país"). The first pair of legs has a pair of small, elongated claws of similar size, twice the length of the body (larger in males). The remaining legs are long and hairy except for the fifth pair. The color varies between shades of red and brown, depending on the fishing area. It is sold live and generally weighs between 0.5 and 1.5 kilos.
